Runway Rework: Derek Lam Spring 2012
If you follow Michelle Obama’s fashion choices, you know that one of the designers that she keeps in heavy rotation is Derek Lam. Lam manages to combine cutting edge and conservative in a way that gels beautifully for working women who are in the spotlight like FLOTUS.
I chose this look for a runway rework because when I’m looking at clothing, I am always attracted to novelty. In the case of this look, it’s all about the jacket, which is short-sleeved (that’s different) and some sort of open work fabric (unique). Those feminine elements, plus the ladylike black pencil skirt, are great juxtaposed with the menswear-inspired striped button down. Let’s go to work.
- J Crew Perfect Shirt in medium gingham, Coldwater Creek crochet jacket – These two items would work as is, but for a closer copy you could easily alter the sleeves of both items to above-the-elbow.
- ASOS Heidi sandals, Velvet by Graham and Spencer pencil skirt, Report Jayde yellow patent wedge sandals
